Hermanville is located immediately inland of Sword Beach. Hence, on the morning of 6th June, the men from the South Lancashire Regiment entered the town. Later, the Shropshire Light Infantry reached Biéville-Beuville, located 4km to the south of Hermanville, with support from the Stafforshire Yeomanry tanks.
Most of the soldiers laid to rest in this cemetery fell on 6 June 1944, or on the days that followed the Normandy Landings.
