Opened in 2011, on the occasion of the 11th centenary of the foundation of Normandy, Ornavik is a living history site covering the Norman period from 911, with Rollo the Viking, to the year 1066 with William the Conqueror.
On the outskirts of Caen, the historic Ornavik park offers a reconstruction of 10th and 11th century Normandy. The site covers a surface area of 10 hectares on the banks of the Orne canal and includes Viking, Carolingian and ducal constructions, all built by applying period techniques and using old materials, with expert advice from archaeologists. Discover part of Normandy’s history in the Carolingian village, the Viking area and the castle mound. Ornavik offers you an opportunity, not only to study history, but to relive it. As soon as you enter the park, you are totally immersed amidst craftsmen, warriors, merchants, nobility and other local characters. The project works extremely well thanks to the commitment of around a hundred volunteers, and to support from the region’s businesses and public authorities.
