It all started back in 1851.
Made from simple quality ingredients, the rich and creamy madeleine cakelet became the speciality of the workers at the Jeannette biscuit factory over the centuries. Jeannette’s success story reached its peak in the 1970s and 1980s, with around 40% of France’s total biscuit market. In December 2013, the factory was closed and its entire staff dismissed. Twenty of them organised a sit-in to avoid the site being dismantled. Their widely broadcast struggle lasted over a year. A participative funding campaign was organised and the necessary funds to buy back production tools and offer the company a new lease of life were collected. Hence, in September 2015, the Biscuiterie Jeannette 1850 reopened its doors to launch a new production of top-quality ‘madeleine’ cakelets. The company was awarded the Living Heritage Company label in November 2017 and the Jeannette madeleine is, today, a renowned product and a pride for the region.
