Abbaye de Longues

PCUNOR014FS0006Q

Description

Nestling on the narrow road that leads from the village of Longues-sur-Mer to Bayeux, the former St. Mary's Abbey was founded in the 12th century. Walk through the first courtyard to discover the abbey lodge, the noble pediment of which bears the traces of modifications made in the 18th century.

Then discover the impressive vestiges of the abbey-church, its elegant Gothic choir and decor similar to that of Bayeux Cathedral. From the church, an exceptional collection of varnished tiles and three rare ceramic funeral slabs can also be admired.

The successive gardens below offer a charming place to walk to the old monks' fishpond on the southern edge of the estate. Although referred to as the monks' refectory, the vast medieval building nearby was most likely reserved for use by the abbot and his guests. It houses interesting 14th century murals and strange graffiti featuring objects of workship.

Guided tours in French, English of Spanish by prior appointment and outside of pubic opening hours.
