Located in the immediate vicinity of the D-Day Landing beaches, the Mémorial de Caen visitor centre is among the essential sites focusing on the Battle of Normandy and 20th century history.
From the origins of the Second World War to the end of the Cold War, the Mémorial’s museographical displays narrate some to the terrible pages of 20th century history. Constantly renewed over the past ten years, it is now at the heart of our reflection on the place we afford to History in our societies.
Over your visit, you will discover the historic events that marked the Second World War, from the onslaught of fascism to the Normandy landings, via the Holocaust. Several films offer you a comprehensive and diversified visit. A specific area covers the Cold War and houses temporary exhibitions.
New: relive Europe’s construction, from its birth to its history, in a brand new immersive exhibition room. An exceptional 19-minute film is projected on a 360° screen. The film begins with the burgeoning hopes of a prosperous 20th century, to conclude with a warning to all those who may forget that peace is the most precious of our common goods, but also the most fragile (the film is included in the museum entry fee).
Audioguides are available in French, English, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.
Guided tours are available through the exhibition areas devoted to the Second World War. During school holidays, guided tours are available for families, in the company of a Mémorial guide. They approach the key questions on the Second World War, thanks to the study of period documents and objects, which can even be handled (from age 8).
