Description

The Ladies' Abbey in Caen, is a Benedictine abbey founded circa 1060 by William the Conqueror's wife, Matilda of Flanders. The splendid Romanesque church houses the tomb of its famous founder. The 18th-century monastic buildings are now home to the headquarters of the Normandy Regional Council. The guided tour includes the 11th-century crypt, which is otherwise closed to visitors. The five-hectare grounds are also well worth the detour, offering splendid panoramic views over Caen.
