Description

Discover Reviers, a charming little village at the gateway to the Bessin...

Located in the lower Valley of the Seulles, Reviers has developed at the confluence of 3 rivers. True green lung and gateway to the Bessin, this village charms by its quietness and its heritage. Washhouses, mills and houses in Creully stone give Reviers an authentic character.

A preserved built heritage
Small village preserved from the bombing of the Landing of June 6, 1944, hit by a single bomb rue des moulins, the built heritage of Reviers is remarkable. Most of the old farms and houses, built between the 18th and 19th centuries, are made of Creully stone, extracted from the quarries located on the road to Amblie, a few kilometres away. From creamy white to ochre blond, the colour of the limestone varies according to the hours and seasons... a beautiful sight for the eyes!

The omnipresence of water
Reviers developed at the confluence of the Seulles, the Douet and the Mue. On the landscape side, there is a total break with the landscape further east, less open plains and endless fields of crops, but more valleys and greenery. The Seulles is a green artery, a veritable lung of greenery.
This river is bordered by a rich vernacular heritage, bearing witness to the customs and habits of yesteryear and the changing lifestyles of its inhabitants

Reviers bears witness to this daily life through these mills and wash houses. The wash-house had an important social function! It was THE meeting place for women coming from the neighbouring countryside and the coast. They used to meet there to share the heavy task of washing clothes by hand and took the opportunity to sing, tell each other about their lives, their difficulties and the latest gossip!

Running water didn't arrive until 1962!

The white marsh phenomenon
Another reason to come and discover this village in winter. Every year, a fascinating phenomenon can be observed in the Seulles valley: the phenomenon of the white marshes. From November until the end of winter, the abundant winter rains cause the river Seulles to overflow onto the surrounding fields, which then turn into an immense body of water, a veritable mirror in which light is reflected. Take binoculars with you and you will be able to see grey herons, egrets, cormorants and sometimes swans.
