Description

The former Gallo-Roman city of Bayeux has, over twenty centuries of history, accumulated a wealth of extraordinary and miraculously well-preserved heritage. Its architecture of half-timbered houses and several 17th and 18th century mansions is quite exceptional. The site is also steeped in medieval and 20th history: the cathedral and the Bayeux Tapestry (embroidery telling the story of the Norman Conquest by William the Conqueror), the Battle of Normandy Memorial Museum and the British war cemetery, where 4,648 soldiers of 11 different nationalities are laid to rest.
