The basilica houses a Black Madonna.
It has been a place of worship and a pilgrimage destination since the 7th century. In the Middle Ages, pilgrimages to Douvres were as famous as those to the Mont-Saint-Michel. A procession is organised every year, in August. The first dated statue of Our Lady, created in the Middle Ages, was destroyed by Protestants in 1561. The present-day stone statue is a Black Madonna and was donated in 1580 by Canon Legendre.
